Temporary edge protection systems are among the most important protective measures used to minimise the risk of falling on construction sites and during maintenance and repair work carried out at height. When correctly designed and installed, they largely guarantee worker safety. However, incorrect approaches applied on site weaken the effectiveness of these systems. Shortcomings such as inadequate material selection, incorrect installation dimensions and the use of non-standard fasteners seriously undermine the performance of the protection system and increase the risk of workplace accidents.

That said, the common mistakes made when installing temporary edge protection are not limited to material or installation shortcomings. Skipping operator training, maintenance planning and periodic inspections also leads to safety gaps. Employers and site teams knowing and learning these five critical mistakes ensures both that legal responsibilities are fulfilled and that a safety culture becomes properly established in working areas. In this guide, five common fundamental mistakes will be examined in detail and preventive measures will be recommended for each.

  1. Inadequate Material Quality

Guardrail profiles and fasteners made from silicon carbide, steel or aluminium alloy must comply with the minimum material quality set out in TS EN 13374. Cheap, recycled products or those without a technical data sheet can bend, crack or corrode over time and lose their protective function. In aggressive outdoor conditions such as rain, humidity and salty atmospheres in particular, material quality directly determines durability.

Using poor-quality materials quickly weakens the system's performance under static and dynamic load testing. This in turn exposes workers to the risk of falling. As a solution, checking certification whenever a batch of material arrives and requesting the manufacturer's warranty and declaration of conformity is the fundamental step in installing a long-lasting and safe protection system.

  1. Non-Standard Installation Dimensions

According to TS EN 13374, the handrail height, intermediate guardrail spacing and toe board height are clearly defined. When these dimensions are exceeded, risky gaps form for workers; when they fall short, protective effectiveness is reduced. For example, if the handrail height is built lower than 1000 mm, the gap remaining above waist level will not hold the worker at the moment of a fall.

In addition, if the distance between guardrail posts exceeds the maximum spacing permitted by the standard, the function of the toe board is partially disabled. To prevent such mistakes, the dimensions must be marked on the site plan before installation, the installation instructions must be followed with a checklist and the approval of the responsible engineer must be obtained.

  1. Fastener Mistakes

Choosing fasteners such as clamps, bolts, nuts and brackets in the wrong size or quality increases the risk of loosening and slipping during installation. When the correct tightening torque is not applied, components can shift under vibration and load. This in turn means the protection system cannot carry sudden loads.

Missing sealing washers required on fasteners also compromises system integrity. Installation records must be kept for the torque and tightness of every connection point in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, and torque checks must be carried out periodically.

  1. Neglecting Periodic Maintenance and Inspection

When regular maintenance and annual checks are not carried out after installation is complete, corrosion, metal fatigue and loosened connections can go unnoticed. On outdoor sites in particular, steel components can rust while aluminium components can develop fatigue cracks.

In this case the protection system loses the strength it had when first tested, leading to unexpected deformation or breakage. As an effective precaution, a maintenance schedule must be prepared by the operations manager and site engineers must complete and report periodic inspection forms regularly.

  1. Untrained Installation Team

Compliance with TS EN 13374 is not limited to materials and design. It is also essential that the installation team fully understands the standard. Untrained personnel may not apply the correct guardrail arrangement and tested connection methods, and may even carry out incorrect installation by skipping the manufacturer's installation guide.

This shortcoming means the system is ineffective on site even if it passes performance testing. Before work begins, all installation personnel must be given "hands-on installation" training supported by TS EN 13374 courses, manufacturer simulation videos and site trials. This way, both theoretical and practical gaps are closed and safety is guaranteed.

How Are Mistakes in Temporary Edge Protection Systems Resolved?

At the root of mistakes in temporary edge protection systems lie time pressure, inadequate planning and gaps in site training. To resolve these mistakes, a process-based risk analysis must first be carried out to identify five main headings: use of incorrect materials, dimensional deviations, unsuitable fasteners, maintenance and inspection gaps, and untrained installation teams. A corrective action plan containing responsibility allocation, checklists and feedback loops must then be prepared for each heading. The process must be coordinated so that both site and office teams act within the same framework.

Inadequate Material Quality: Component certificates are checked for every batch and contracts with suppliers lacking quality documentation are cancelled immediately. Sample testing processes and acceptance criteria are defined so that all components sent to site pass laboratory approval.

Non-Standard Installation Dimensions: Site sketches and measurement markings are approved by an engineer before installation. Measuring equipment is calibrated. The installation instruction is distributed to every team member as a checklist and every completed step is reported.

Fastener Mistakes: A "Connection Instruction" containing the correct torque values and material specifications is prepared. It becomes mandatory for every clamp, nut and bracket to be approved by a sample torque test before application and to be monitored with periodic torque check forms.

Neglecting Periodic Maintenance & Inspection: Annual and six-monthly maintenance schedules are created. After each inspection, the site report automatically notifies the relevant managers via the company intranet. Wherever wear, corrosion or loosening is detected, "corrective maintenance" is initiated and action is taken within 24 hours.

Untrained Installation Team: A mandatory guide covering TS EN 13374 and the manufacturer's manuals is delivered to site personnel in weekly modules. Those who successfully complete the training receive a certificate. Site managers assign only certified personnel, and knowledge tests are applied during random site inspections.

How Is Edge Protection Installed?

Installing an edge protection system is a critical step in ensuring the safety of personnel working at height. A ground survey and risk analysis must be carried out before installation and the appropriate TS EN 13374 class determined. Using the correct height, spacing and fasteners during installation minimises the risk of workers falling and preserves the tested performance of the system.

The installation steps are as follows:

Preparation and planning: Determine the route of the protection line on the site and mark the risky areas. Calculate the protection class and number of components required.

Material and tool check: Verify that the posts, handrails, intermediate guardrails, toe boards, clamps and bolts are TS EN 13374 certified and consistent with the technical data sheet. Prepare the necessary hand tools and personal protective equipment.

Measurement and marking: Mark 1,000 mm from the ground reference for the handrail height, 500 mm for the intermediate guardrail height and 100 mm for the toe board. Mark the post installation points along the line at maximum intervals of 2,000 mm.

Fixing the posts: Place base-plate or clamp-type posts at the marked points and bring them to the vertical using a spirit level. Tighten the bolts and nuts to the manufacturer's torque value.

Handrail and intermediate guardrail installation: Fit the upper horizontal profile (handrail) components to the posts, align them in the vertical plane and fix them with clamps. Position the second horizontal profile between the top guardrail and the toe board and complete the connection using the same method.

Positioning the toe board: Fit the toe board profiles parallel to the horizontal surface, beneath the guardrail posts, at a height of at least 100 mm. Make sure the lower edge of the profile sits firmly so that it stops falling materials.

Fasteners and torque check: Check the tightness of the clamps, brackets and bolt-and-nut sets with a torque wrench periodically. Re-measure torque values frequently, especially in sections subject to vibration or dynamic load.

Final checks and testing: Confirm by static load testing that the installed system carries the class-based forces to be applied horizontally. Take deflection measurements to make sure the TS EN 13374 tolerances are not exceeded.
